We've been wanting to take a ride out there for a while and we finally went. Even though it's in the same Parish we live in it is about a 2 1/2 hour drive (rand mcnally said 3 hrs 10 mins - they don't know Big Red!!) we had to drive thru 2 other parishes to get there.

The water is much cleaner than I thought it would be. It's muddy because the Mississippi River runs into the Gulf here. It is much cleaner than the North Sea!!
Born from the collision between the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico, Grand Isle is rich in geologic history. Between 2,000 and 800 years ago, the Mississippi River flowed through what is now known as Bayou Lafourche. All the sediment the river drained from the mid-west U.S. was deposited into the Barataria and Timbalier deltas. Over the course of time, the deltas sank and became the bays we know today. Wave and tidal action pushed the excess sand from these bays into the barrier islands of Grand Isle, Grand Terre Island, E. Timbalier Island, and Timbalier Island. Unfortunately, the same forces that gave birth to Grand Isle are now trying to destroy it. The constant damage from hurricanes and tidal erosion is causing the Island to move from west to east at about 16 feet per year. Hopefully, with some intervention, Grand Isle will be around to meet the next millennium. http://www.cajunimages.com/Pages/art_grand_isle.htm

The beaches are nice and they have facilities to shower and also get some shade.

The beach houses all have their own names. We saw some gorgeous houses and a lot of property for rent.
LA 1 has water on both sides. As soon as a storm is approaching this is the 1st road to flood and it is the only way out!
They are building barriers along the beach to break the water coming ashore.
We rode along this bayou for quite a few miles, it reminded us of the little canals in Holland, there were also a few houseboats, just like Holland.
This is where the Crawfish live!! I love me some Crawfish!!
We had lunch at a little restaurant on the way out of Grand Isle. We had fried catfish for our appetizer, which was the best I've had and we shared a fried sea food platter. I got to eat the shrimp while Emile ate the fried oysters. The crabcakes and other fried fish were delicious as well.We were beat by the time we got home. Emile cut the grass while I chopped up a watermelon. We also had to go get a sno-ball, (thanks Julie!!) that was all I could think of after I read your blog. The sno-ball place was packed. I got a wedding cake one. It was sooooo good!!
Oh, and the Gulf water was pretty warm. We think it was about 70 something degrees, nice for swiming, not good during Hurricane season!

Looks nice out there, Dan's mom's boyfriend has a camp out there and they have been spending a lot of time out there. They like it out there.
It's nice, but too quiet for us. Can't wait to go to the beaches in Alabama.
