went well. We hadn't heard from the vet by noon so we called because we got worried. He was still in the OR and they were closing him up. The Doc called a little while later and said that his surgery went well. The only thing abnormal was his heart rhythm, it wouldn't stay steady, got rapid, then slower but they got it under control and he's fine. The Doc said that he has never seen a dog waggin his tail while under anesthesia . . . that's our Rufi!!
This is the procedure he had to undergo:
If the groove that the patella rides in is shallow or misshapen, it is surgically deepened; we usually use an advanced technique to perform this called the block osteotomy. The illustration right demonstrates elevation of the cartilage/bone plate. I now use a modified procedure in which the cartialge/bone plate is left attached to the soft tissues (periosteum) at the top of the groove, thus minimizing the risk that the cartilage/bone plate will become displaced in the joint.
Additional bone is removed from the raw bone bed and the cartilage/bone plate is replaced creating a deep groove for the patella to ride in. The benefit of the block osteotomy is that it uniformly deepens the groove from top to bottom and preserves the cartilage that the patella rides on.

He's on heavy medication right now like morphine and all that good stuff. I hope we can pick him up Friday. If we do we may keep him home for the night and I'll bring him to the vet Saturday. I went to buy him a little carrier so it'll be easier in the car.
I also looked at the little puppy strollers, Dang!! . . they are just as much as a regular baby stroller . . . maybe grandma will buy him one :)
